MASSIVE RABBIT RESCUE EFFORT COORDINATED BY SPAY/NEUTER CLINIC AND HOUSTON, PORT LAVACA AND DALLAS RESCUES FRIDAY, 4/20/12
Spay/Houston, Bunny Buddies, WildRescue Rescue. Inc./Rabbit Rescue, and the Port LaVaca Humane coordinate a massive rescue effort for over 100 rabbits.
HOUSTON and PORT LAVACA, April 19, 2012, Harris and Calhoun Counties, Texas – The Port LaVaca animal shelter has been inundated with stray rabbits from a local neighborhood. The rabbits had been turned lose but never spayed or neutered, so the rabbits have overwhelmed the neighborhood. Rabbit are pregnant for only about 30 days, so they can have as many as 12 litters per year.
Port LaVaca is a small town in Central Texas. The shelter is not equipped to handle the volume of animals coming in the door, so the Port LaVaca Humane Society reached out for help and contacted Spay/Houston when 89 rabbits ended up at the shelter. Spay/Houston is owned and operated by Adopt A Cat, Inc. They are accustomed to handling odd cat issues, but not a bunny explosion. Deana Sellens, the Executive Director for Spay/Houston immediately contacted volunteers from Bunny Buddies and the bunny network sprung into action.
“We have the facility to handle all of the spay/neuter surgeries, but we had no idea how to place the rabbits. Luckily, Bunny Buddies networks with rabbit rescues all over Texas. Once we get the bunnies back to Houston, Spay/Houston will be vetting them with the financial support of the Petco Foundation and then they will be shipped all over the state for adoption,” explains Sellens.
Since the initial contact,WildRescue, Inc./Rabbit Rescue, Dakota Rescue, House Rabbit Resource Network, the Adopt A Cat Shelter, Clipped Ear Cat Sanctuary, Citizens for Animal Protection and Special Pals have joined the effort. WildRescue, Inc./Rabbit Rescue gains custody of the rabbits Friday, April 20, and in collaboration with Bunny Buddies will be the most instrumental in placing the bunnies into forever homes.
“Unfortunately, these situations are coming up more and more as people take in bunnies and then do not realize the
amount of work involved,” explains Diana Leggett, President of WildRescue/Rabbit Rescue
The rabbits are all different colors and sizes. They will be up for adoption as soon as they are vetted and spayed/neutered. If you would like to adopt a bunny, contact Bunny Buddies (bunnybuddies.org) or WildRescue,Inc./Rabbit Rescue (rescuedrabbits.org).
If you would like to help with this effort, they are still looking for temporary housing for the rabbits for anywhere from 1 to 4 weeks. Ideally, it would be best if they were housed in one air conditioned location. They still need volunteers to help care for the animals, pet bowls that screw to cages, small animal water bottles, gift cards to Petco, gas cards, and grocery store gift cards. The gift cards will be used for transportation expenses, fresh vegetables for the rabbits, and rabbit food/litter.
