Look Who We’ve Adopted: Barney, Sugar and Rascal

brendabutchmcgeebarney

Apologies for the alliteration…  Brenda and Butch McGee adopted this beautiful bunny, Barney, from Rabbit Rescue in 2004.  Barney is a precocious American Fuzzy Lop who was found in a bird cage in a garage. He has quite the personality. He can sit on Butch’s lap for hours getting his nose and ears rubbed. Barney is about 5 years old now.

Brenda and Butch’s other two rabbits, Sugar (white) and Rascal (brown & white) enjoy an evening romping around the den. These mini lops came into the McGee’s lives in 2003. Their mom, Pepper, was a rescue that produced a beautiful litter of 4 bunnies just a couple days after she arrived at Rabbit Rescue. Brenda and Butch fostered Pepper and all four of her babies and, as often happens with fosters, they ended up keeping two.

Look Who We’ve Adopted: Nicolaus and Ella

tammy-beckemeyer-houstonnicolausfeb2008

Nicolaus was an extraordinary bunny. Nicolaus was a Netherland Dwarf, Siamese Sable in color, and was adopted by Tammy Breckenmeyer-Houston in March 2003. He was about 6 months old and he was an amputee.

Nicolaus could not have been adopted by just anybody, he needed to go home with someone with a lot of knowledge about rabbits. He was a very sweet bunny with a kind and giving soul. He gave rabbit kisses to everyone. He was never afraid of anything as he slept for hours at a time and never blinked at the vacuum or loud noises.

Nicolaus got around just fine on the 3 legs he had until the last several months of his life. He had advanced dental disease and always managed to beat the odds. He had some of his back teeth pulled, filed, survived a dental abscess that worked it’s way through his left eye and he survived!  Tammy got him a set of wheels when he started loosing the ability to use his only back leg. The chair did not help him to strengthen his leg as was thought might be the case, because he had arthritis and could no longer use his leg. Nicolaus scooted around for a while longer until he could no longer walk at all. He was not in any pain, and was well cared for. He began to show signs of pain on 28th of March, 2009, so Tammy did the right thing and let him go the next day. He was shutting down. He gave everyone so much joy and was a popular little guy at the Vet’s office and with many at Rabbit Rescue. He touched everyone who met him…  Especially Ella:

Ella is a white Hotot rabbit that Tammy and her husband David adopted from Rabbit Rescue as a baby.  They saw her when she was just 3 weeks old and fell in love.  She came home with them once she was old enough to, in the spring of 2004. Ella was selected out of a litter to be a companion to Nicolaus.

Ella was a companion to Nicolaus until he passed away Mar 29 2009. She is a feisty girl and loves to be petted.

Look Who We’ve Adopted: Herman, Harvey and Flopsy

A note from Tina about Harvey: "Harvey was my precious tri-pod. He had a rough start in life. A mean man trying to save money decided he would do his own spaying/neutering. What a terrible thing! He messed up a nerve in Harvey's back leg and it became useless so the vet had to amputate. :( As the picture clearly shows, Harvey was a bit spoiled. He had a good last couple of years with his new mom. Sadly, Harvey passed away last year. I moved and left my kids with my mom a couple of weeks until I got settled. Harvey went downhill suddenly and quickly one day with no time to make it to the vet. My mom held and comforted little Harvey until he passed."

Flopsy is Tina's most recent adoption. Flopsy had to take a snooze after a big salad.
